The COO Daily Routine
A daily routine is a hot topic these days. Lots of examples of ways to consistently get into your day, ways to improve efficiency and mindset. There is a great deal of success to be had from here. But here is the rub.
Operations does not have a typical day.
If you own a business, if you are a COO or operations professional, or you employ one – this is an undisputed fact. Every day is different, every day brings new challenges and every day requires new solutions.
Then only true daily routine I have is to expect the unexpected and adjust accordingly. I would love to not look at my email, or slack or my project management software when I wake in the morning. But if something is wrong, I have lost valuable time to fix and repair. Personally I stress out more NOT knowing what is going on, than picking up the phone first thing.
On days when everything is smooth. Great, I get to meditate, journal, and ease into my day. But most days, I have to start a plan to attack, prepare my teams for the day, and ensure that the organization is ready to run and make money. Simple as that.
The only thing consistent in my day is how I attack the day. I carry 3 notebooks with me at all times. One for just journalling ideas. Another one to track the “stuff” that happens each day (to do’s, et). Finally, one for daily reflection that I use at the end of the day. Keep my life in proper compartments helps me tackle each day.
This is why a COO is so critical for any business owner, CEO and Entrepreneur – someone that can live in Chaos, and create calm out of it. In Operations, we strive for consistency, repeatability, efficiency and effectiveness. The only way to get there is to steer through the daily challenges facing each and every business.
